100 Lifetimes – 25. Legend
A long time ago, there was a newborn prince cursed with a body made from ice. An old king passing by took pity on the prince and cast a spell to give him a body of flesh and blood. So long as the prince’s heart burned with fire, his body would be warm and he would never again return to ice.
One day, a great betrayal struck the prince. He learned a dark secret which made him doubt the love which kept him warm. His heart ran cold, and the prince’s body became ice once more.
Snow fell over the entire world, bringing a deep and unending winter. Rivers froze over, and oceans chilled. The entire surface of the planet turned white with ice and snow, and the prince’s body became the great glacier which encased the old kingdom he once lived in.
Many years later, a golden-haired boy was born. Though the world was still in winter, the snow around the boy melted, and plants grew along his feet. He was the herald of spring, there to banish the winter.
The world gathered together and pleaded for him to save them from the prince’s curse. The boy thus set off on a journey to the old kingdom, a trail of spring left behind him. Yet the closer he came to the frozen heart of the prince, the colder the boy felt. Even he could not withstand the freezing chill of the prince’s barren heart. The boy pressed on courageously. Eventually he stood before the heart of the prince, the blue core of ice at the center of the frozen kingdom.
The boy was told to destroy the prince’s heart to break the curse. He held in his hand a mighty hammer which would smash the ice to pieces, leaving the prince’s heart in shards. Yet the boy found that he could not bring himself to injure the prince’s heart. He found its deep blue color beautiful, and he stared into its depths. The boy looked into the prince’s heart, and what he saw was a sadness so profound that it made the boy weep.
The prince had only wanted to be loved. He loved others fiercely, but he had become so deeply afraid. He could not believe in the love of others. His heart closed, and because of that, he became ice.
The boy wished to save the prince, but he did not know what to do. He cried for the prince’s pain, his warm tears falling.
The boy became the companion to the prince’s heart. He journeyed to the prince often, speaking and sharing stories to the ice. He listened to the voiceless sorrow and shed tears for the pain that the prince had not been able to speak.
The boy’s tears were always warm. After many years, these warm tears formed cracks in the ice, and slowly but surely the glacier began to melt. The fire in the prince’s heart would once again rekindle, ignited by the love the boy gave so freely, and as the prince awoke with a body warmed by compassion, the long winter would finally come to an end.

The record is doing well. Loki is being suspiciously mature and civilized. And Thor never had a single chance in hell.

Pursued by his cursed brother, Loki must do anything to save his magic, even if that means surrendering to the same dark desires his old self relished.
Exerpt:
He pinched Loki’s earlobe between his teeth. “I spoke at length with The Oracle Beyond the Pale when they blessed the knife. They tell me the Old Loki longed for this. He ached for an unbrotherly touch.”
He kissed Loki behind his ear and he couldn’t help it, the delicious tingling sent sweet sparks straight to his cock. Thor hummed knowingly against his neck and sucked on Loki’s exposed clavicle.
“I’m n-not him.”
Thor reached down to cup Loki’s crotch. He swelled more as Thor massaged him, rolling his palm against Loki’s length.
He laughed, a low malicious rumble. “”Not really him, no. But the Pale One knows more than even a clever little trickster guesses. They say you carry him with you. And it seems…”
Thor lazily unlaced Loki’s leggings and exposed him to the air as he spoke,
“… That you certainly share his appetites.”

I think a lot about Thor avoiding Loki after The Avengers.
he doesn’t go to Loki’s cell. doesn’t talk to him. spends as much time as possible away from Asgard. I think part of it is anger – the betrayal, the sense of how could he do this, a desire to punish Loki by ignoring him (because more than anything else, Loki has always hated being ignored).
but I think part of it is also fear and confusion: Thor doesn’t get why things have changed so much, and he’s afraid of confronting Loki about it, because on some level Thor doesn’t want all his worst impressions to be realized. he hopes there’s some kind of explanation, some kind of reason, maybe even some kind of excuse. but he’s afraid that there just…isn’t, and doesn’t want to face the possibility that the Loki he knew growing up is just…gone forever.
so rather than deal with that, he avoids it, and avoids Loki, because as long as he doesn’t see Loki he doesn’t have to deal with him, and on some level Thor really doesn’t want to.
with Frigga’s murder, the anger overcomes that fear, but he still retains this closed off, hard-hearted facade, because he’s determined, even then, not to deal with the implicit vulnerability of asking why.
because he’s afraid of the answer.
And afraid of being manipulated by Loki, of being called on shit by him. And because Odin forbade any visitors, and Thor wants to be the Good Son, so he kept himself busy cleaning up messes that supposedly Loki inspired.
I too think a lot about this period in their relationships and I love this meta.
I actually wrote it this way in a fic where they finally talk about shit (and also have sex, naturally):
“Why did you not come to see me for a year after I was imprisoned?”
It became clear to Thor that talk of the ‘pang’ of guilt was not merely metaphorical, because he felt it as a sudden ache in his stomach. “I was angry,” he said simply. “And hurt, and confused. But I was too cowardly to ask the questions that ate at me, because I feared what the answers might be. It was… easier to nurse my anger at a distance. To tell myself that I had given you up for lost, when in truth I kept myself in just enough ignorance to keep a spark of hope alive.”
Loki laughed, with far less bitterness than Thor might have expected. “Do you know, that reminds me of this strange theory Midgardians have about ‘subatomic particles’—very small components of matter. They say that the position of these particles is not only unknown but indeterminate until a measurement is taken. A skeptic of this view devised a thought experiment that he took to be a reductio ad absurdum: suppose a cat is put in a box with a flask of poison, and a certain motion of one of these particles will trigger a mechanism to break the flask. If the position of the particle is truly indeterminate until measured, then until we open the box, the cat is both alive and dead—but that cannot be. Just so, it seems, you thought that I was at once lost to you and not, in reach of salvation and not, so long as you never spoke to me to find out which it was.”
Thor frowned. “And yet it is not so strange to think that the state of a person’s mind is unfixed until asked after as to think that a cat may be both alive and dead until seen to be one or the other. I feared that if, in anger, I spoke the wrong words to you, I would ensure that I had lost you forever.”
“But you did not fear that you might ensure it by waiting too long to ask?” Loki said, more gently than the words might have warranted.
Thor pressed his fingers to his closed eyelids and sighed. “I did. I did, but I was a coward. I kept telling myself that it had not been too long yet; that if you were still my brother, a few months would not be enough to change that. I could not bear to let go of either my anger or my hope.”
Loki laughed again, slightly taunting, but still remarkably benign. “If only I had recorded it for the ages—the mighty Thor admitting to cowardice!”

(as always, if someone wants in or out of the taglist, just let me know)
I was tagged by @loxxxlay and @wnnbdarklord… probably about 2 weeks ago, but I’ve been procrastinating because this is actually the kind of thing that requires some thought. But I’m finally doing it because who would pass up an opportunity to rec their own work?
Hello, you have been identified as An Awesome Fic Writer™. Congrats, you rock! So that all of your readers can shower you with some extra love today, please tell us your favourite five stories of yours and why you like them and then send this to another five fic authors you think deserve this title!
1. The Abyss Gazes Also (gen; Loki in the Void / Loki & Thanos fic, a.k.a. WTF happened to Loki between Thor 1 and The Avengers?)
This fic isn’t my favorite for the writing quality, which I’ll admit is pretty uneven, but because it’s the longest thing I’ve ever written (at 72k words, it’s longer than my dissertation); it’s the first fic I started writing when I got back into fanfiction in 2015, after 10 years’ hiatus; and it’s the fic that I’ve put the most thought into. It’s also been one of the most frustrating, both because I have trouble writing plot – introspection and conversations are where I’m most comfortable – and because nobody’s fucking reading it. (OK, not nobody, but very few people.) It’s especially frustrating when I see people on Tumblr complaining about the lack of Loki-in-the-Void fic that isn’t straight-up torture porn (hello!), or spitballing half-formed theories about what happened with Thanos, and I’m like, I have thought about this extensively! Here are my extensive thoughts! Yes, they are in fic form, and I don’t really want to rehash them in meta. I will say, though, that the few people who have read it have been very enthusiastic, and a remarkable number of the comments are people saying they’ve made it their headcanon about what happened, which is an incredible vote of confidence. Perhaps one of the things that makes me proudest is that the enthusiastic readers are split between people who would consider themselves “Loki stans/apologists” and Thorki or Thor&Loki fans who get annoyed about said Loki stans/apologists trying to absolve Loki of all blame. The fact that people in both camps like my fic indicates that I’ve come up with an account that assigns Loki just the right amount of culpability: he’s not completely innocent, but there are some major extenuating circumstances. (And maybe the two camps don’t actually disagree as much as they think they do… it may be mostly a matter of emphasis and group membership signaling.)
2. Desert Flowers (very mild Thorki; Thor and Loki get high and talk philosophy)
This is my first Thorki fic, written before I was really committed to shipping it, but it ended up kicking off my now 12-fic Thorki series Whatever is done from love. The funniest thing about this fic is that it started as a crack idea: what would happen if Loki got Thor stoned and then tried to get him to talk about philosophy? But then I took it entirely too seriously, thinking about when and where Loki would have gotten marijuana, and then suddenly it veered into issues of racism and morality and I really started thinking about Loki’s Jewish coding in Marvel media. And there are Nietzsche quotes, of course.
3. The Tree of Knowledge (full-on Thorki, immediately follows “DF”)
This is my first fully committed Thorki fic, with actual sex. I also think it’s probably my most consistently well-written fic. It seemed to flow more quickly and easily than most of my other fics; parts of it were fully formed in my head before I committed it to electronic paper.
4. Winter, Autumn, and Spring (Thorki porn with feelings; 10 years before Thor’s coronation, Loki tells him they need to end their affair)
I have kind of mixed feelings about this fic because the writing is sometimes on the florid side, but a lot of my Thorki readers say it’s their favorite. And I think it’s also one of my more original ideas. In the realm of canon-compliant fic, there’s a lot of first-time pre-canon Thorki out there, a lot of TDW prison sex, imagined reunions before Ragnarok came out, post-Ragnarok “where did that ‘I’m here’ scene go?” or “married life” on the Ark… but as far as I know, I’m the only one who’s written a fic bridging the gap between pre-canon Thorki and the tense, semi-hostile situation between them as the first Thor movie begins. And I think I did a reasonable job making it plausible, if I may say so.
5. The Third Time (gen; Loki dies for real in some vaguely described speculative version of Ragnarok, he and Thor have a last conversation)
This is the first fic I posted on AO3 (though I had started working on “Abyss” beforehand), and like “The Tree of Knowledge,” I think it’s one of my best-written. It’s more concise and precisely worded than most of my other fics, probably because I had it almost entirely formulated in my head before I wrote it down: it was worn smooth over the course of many showers, like a river pebble. I wish Loki’s actual movie death had permitted him as much dignity.
Tagging 5 people who have probably already been tagged, but I’m too lazy to go digging through your blogs to verify: @darklittlestories, @ghostxforest, @illwynd, @incredifishface, @rynfinity
It’s probably tacky to reblog this, but I did put some thought into it… and also I’m not confident that some of the people I tagged actually saw it. Why does Tumblr keep fucking up with the tag notifications…?
“You will tell me why,” Thor snarls down at him, fingers flexing on his axe-shaft, looming over Loki’s kneeling form like the old gods he clings to, gory and huge and terrible.
“I am a King,” he replies, baring his blood-stained teeth in a feral grin. “Kings do not share.”
Our Kingdom Come by amberfox17 , another collaboration between us inspired by the last episode of Vikings, “Eye for an Eye”.
