One more MCU movie to watch so I can finish my pre-IW ranking. Fortunately, Civil War is on Netflix, so I don’t have to deal with any more crappy illegal videos.

Why is Steve being such an arrogant prick?

Oh hey, that’s the “Pie Jesu” from Fauré’s Requiem that the little boys in the ruffly robes are singing at Peggy’s funeral.

Why are there police in Bucharest speaking German with “Polizei” on their vests?

I just completely ignored a whole action sequence to scroll through Tumblr on my phone. I don’t feel like I missed anything important. That might say more about me than it does about the movie.

Yeah, actually, it is kind of a problem if Pepper only wants to be with Tony if he gives up being Iron Man. It’s too big a part of him.

I thought they were going to do something with the thing about Tony’s left arm going numb… but then they didn’t. Does he have heart problems? Are they ever going address that again?

Does Wanda’s costume really need to have that much cleavage?

Something I forgot to comment on w.r.t. “Ant-Man”: those throwing discs that change the size of objects… how do they know when to stop? Object boundaries aren’t actually that sharp, physically speaking.

I think this is supposed to seem tragically inevitable, but it all just kind of strikes me as ridiculous.

But Wanda’s costume is so……..meh and almost prudish compared to comic Wanda. (who believes in showing off everything)

That’s just such a sleazy standard of comparison (to use a term my dad picked up in the army) that I’m not even considering it and movie costume designers shouldn’t, either.

no but disturbing realistic superheroes

Vision has no hair anywhere on his body–no armpit hair, no eyebrows, no eyelashes. No fingernails. His skin tastes like metal. Sometimes, he forgets to breathe for minutes or hours at a time.

Captain Marvel smells like burning. When you touch her, your hand comes away cold because she’s absorbed your body heat. If she gets cut, she bleeds light. She can tell you what the inside of an explosion feels like.

Bruce Banner vomits after de-hulking. His skin is always red and peeling. He looks sick, like he has a fever, and he ingests more medication than actual food. There are blisters on his lips.

Tony Stark has a huge, sunken scar on his sternum where the arc reactor was removed and his chest aches each time he takes a breath. He has callouses in odd places–so does the whole team, really–and there is a permanent bald spot on the back of his head where it has been cut open every time he gets thrown around in his suit.

Spider-Man sometimes forgets which way is up–if you put him in a room with identical walls, floor, and ceiling, he couldn’t tell you which is which. His hands and feet are prickly to the touch, even through his costume. He is very nearsighted.

The Scarlet Witch has no sense of boundaries; if you can’t tell she’s spying on your thoughts, why should she stop? She doesn’t do it out of any malicious intent, just out of curiosity and convenience. She never loses arguments.

Thor speaks about events that happened thousands of years ago as if they were last week. Cats arch their backs and stare at him. Something about him–his eyes, or his skin, or the way he moves–seems slightly off, like he doesn’t belong on Earth at all.

stuff like that.

Why was Loki able to extract Valkyrie’s memory?

This is not something we’ve seen him do before. Not that he would have had any occasion to in previous movies, but this is kind of in a different category from other things he does with magic: mostly illusions, shapeshifting, and moving things around.

This is some wild-ass, blatantly self-interested speculation, but… what if the power to draw out other people’s memories is a relatively new ability that he gained from his interaction with the Mind Stone? Scarlet Witch got her powers from experimentation with the Mind Stone, and one of the things we’ve seen her do is get into people’s heads and make them experience things based on their worst fears and most painful memories.

This at least suggests that forcing people to re-experience memories is one of the things that the Mind Stone can do, in addition to co-opting their will to make them serve the aims of the wielder. I think everyone I know has dismissed the idea that Thanos was controlling Loki the way Loki controlled Barton and Selvig; that’s probably not something you can do to a magically powerful being like Loki. BUT Scarlet Witch was able to do the fear-exploiting thing with Thor, and Loki simultaneously experienced and forced the Valkyrie to re-experience her worst memory – that is something you can do to more powerful beings.

So… this provides some circumstantial evidence in favor of the theory I explore in my fic The Abyss Gazes Also about what happened between Thanos and Loki: that Thanos exploited Loki’s own fears, resentments, and insecurities and forced him to re-experience his most traumatic memories involving his family (especially Thor and Odin) to manipulate him into invading Earth on Thanos’s behalf and fighting against his adoptive family.

I was thinking exactly along these lines and am SO EXCITED that for wherever reason we have new Loki powers to play with!

I think he always had the abilities to tap into someone’s memories, there just wasn’t any place to showcase those abilities yet or maybe he just never bothered to practice them. And I think it isn’t clear if HE could see Valkyrie’s memories, or if he simply triggered her to see them.

If he did that to distract her, why not take her down before she recovers from the flashback?

Instead, he seemed only a little less dazed than she was at the end which (added to her rage at having to remember) allows her to take him out with one punch.

His stricken facial expression, as well as his general air of disorientation, did seem to suggest that he had seen it, too.
