Last sentence meme

@iamanartichoke tagged me about 2 weeks ago and at the time I hadn’t gotten any fic written recently, but I finally wrote about a page of the next chapter of First Things while I was on a long flight last week.

The game is to post the last sentence you wrote and to tag as many people as there are words in the sentence!

“I
fear that would only make my distraction worse,” Thor replied.

10 points to your House if you remember from the previous chapter(s) what he’s talking about.

11 words, that’s not too bad. OK, who writes around here? @iamanartichoke, it’s probably been long enough that you have something new. @foundlingmother, @ghostxforest@illwynd, @incredifishface, @loxxxlay, @neveserene, @seamayweed@seidrade, @taranoire, @writernotwaiting

For the fic writing meme! 4, 11, 16 ❤️

4. Which has the most “you” in it, however you’d define that?

Desert Flowers, holy shit. Long Nietzsche quotes, Loki’s Jewish coding, Thor and Loki getting high and talking about philosophy… plus an incestuous kiss disguised as a move in an argument.

11. If I’m showing off just one of your pieces to someone, which one should it be?

Kinda depends on the person and their interests. If a Thorki shipper, probably The Tree of Knowledge (hopefully as a lead-in to the rest of the series…); if not… Prince of Darkness has been the little fic that could. It keeps getting random kudos months after I posted it. And maybe someone who likes it could be persuaded to read Abyss (and not be put off by the first-person narration, which apparently everyone has decided they hate).

16. 3 favorite comments ever received on fanfic.

@incredifishface left the nicest long, gushy, frequently all-caps comments with a lot of quotations on the first two installments in my Thorki series, “Desert Flowers” and “The Tree of Knowledge.” I am still extremely proud that one of my favorite fanfictional stylists said of my fic, “Style-wise, not one word out of place” 😛

I also appreciated all the long, thoughtful comments @seidrade left on my fics, which led to some very enjoyable back-and-forth about philosophy and character analysis and ultimately to them joining Tumblr. In the words of the charmingly annoying little sister from The Philadelphia Story: “I did it, I did it all.”

Thank you so much for asking! And here’s the question meme again in case anyone else wants to play.

can we talk about Marvel official website has updated Loki’s bio that confirms the “Loki was under the influence of the mind stone” fan theory?

Not a Loki apologist here, he did what he did, but a lot of stuff, his version of how he fell from the Bifrost, that speech in Germany, especially the “sudden clarity” scene with Thor makes a lot more sense.

Seems like after 10 fuckin years marvel saw a value in Loki and has stopped shitting on him. What a time to be alive

#tbh it was always pretty clear that we were meant to read something like that into it#and because it’s there in the original performance I’m not convinced that marvel is suddenly aware of Loki as a worthwhile character#i think someone has figured out he’s bankable#but their understanding of him has never been worse than now (via @illwynd)

Gonna be totally tacky and toot my own horn, but a) I knew it and b) I think I have a better hypothesis on how exactly Loki was influenced by the Mind Stone than anyone at Marvel does. (I think even Joss Whedon didn’t think it all the way through.)

And yes, in 2011-2013 Marvel saw Loki’s value and complexity. Fanboys and certain other actors who were jealous of Loki’s popularity (notably with women) seem to have played a role in Marvel’s decision to shit on his character in his most recent movie appearances. I’m not sure why they’re coming back around to acknowledging his complexity, other than that you can’t sustain a TV show with the cartoon character we got in Ragnarok.

Fic summary: “I imagine you’re wondering how I survived my fall into the Void to eventually arrive on Earth, looking like death warmed over (but a very stylishly attired death, I might add). It’s a fairly interesting story, if not a pleasant one, so I’m perfectly willing to tell you. I do, after all, have rather a lot of time to kill.”  After his fall, Loki finds his way into the criminal underworld of the Andromeda Galaxy, where he makes a name for himself with his unusual skills and attracts the attention of Thanos.

Chapter summary: Loki is brought as a prisoner to the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier… and begins to have serious doubts about his mission.

This is by far my longest hiatus between updates: it’s been 13 and a half months since I posted the previous chapter. I’m really sorry, guys. I’ve had a lot going on in the year since my last update: I finished and defended my dissertation; I applied for a crap ton of jobs (more than 60); I finally(!!) got a job… a 1-year postdoc, which means I’m already on the job market again; I moved to Canada for this 1-year job, which has presented a variety of administrative hassles; and now I’m teaching my own class for the first time (not just TAing for a professor).

I’m also sorry that, in addition to being a year late, this chapter is shorter than usual and not much happens. Well, not much happens externally… most of the action is going on in Loki’s head. And while, as you all know, I was not on the whole pleased with Ragnarok, it did provide me with an interesting mechanism for introducing some of Loki’s doubts.

Tagging people who are/were reading: @angrymadsygin, @foundlingmother@fuckyeahrichardiii, @iamanartichoke (I don’t know if you have been reading, but you expressed interest in the excerpt), @iamhisgloriouspurpose, @ikoliholic@illwynd, @loxxxlay, @nursejoh53, @seidrade, @starrynight35@writernotwaiting… and I’m sorry if I forgot anyone. Let me know if you want on or off the tag list.

Guys, if you ever speculate what Loki experienced after falling, how he ended up with Thanos, what happened to him when imprisoned by Thanos, and what Loki’s thoughts were during Avengers, I’d highly recommend this fic. @philosopherking1887 builds off of the hints we’re given in the movie and creates something very compelling.

Reblogging with kind blurb… which does a better job of explaining this sprawling mess of a fic than my non-summary does.

Coming across @philosopherking1887’s masterful writing— and then getting into some incredibly interesting, long conversations in her AO3 comments— was what prompted me to finally join Tumblr fandom close to a year ago. Just sayin. Big ups to Phil.

The Abyss Gazes Also is seriously SO much fun— sometimes the opposite of fun for Loki, but well, you know…

Like @foundlingmother said, if you want a truly fantastic, incredibly unique and introspective read through Loki’s eyes of his misadventures after the end of Thor— with sharp, clever writing that makes you go OOOHHHH every chapter with a brilliant missing piece that just snaps everything unexplained by canon right into place— you’ve come to the right fic.

Seriously, can’t recommend enough.

I’m going to keep reblogging this with the rave reviews. Tacky? Maybe. Not as tacky as that big ugly… building in the middle of New York.

Seven sentences meme

Rules: go to page 7 of your WIP, go down to the 7th line, copy the next 7 sentences, then tag 7 people to do the same.

I was tagged by several people at least 2 weeks ago – I don’t even remember who-all tagged me. @iamanartichoke, I think, and @loxxxlay, maybe @foundlingmother or @illwynd…? I don’t want to go that far back in my activity feed. Anyway, I was waiting until I actually had 7 pages of the new chapter of Abyss. I hope I’ll actually be able to post the chapter before too long…

I did not have long to ponder the
odds, because the guards leading me had come to a halt before a cylindrical
chamber, walled in glass with metal floor and ceiling, suspended by metal arms
that gripped its sides.  The one-eyed
man, Director Fury, stood on the walkway beside it, watching me intently.  The guard at the head of one of the columns
flanking me pressed a button beside the door to the glass cylinder and it slid
open.  I briefly considered what would
happen if I did not walk through the door of my own volition; these eight
Midgardians, with all their armor and weaponry and specialized training, could
not physically force me—and from Fury’s piercing gaze, at once calculating and
warning, I gathered that he knew.  Good
thing I was here of my own volition, then.
I stepped into the cell, then turned and watched the door slide closed
again.

Fury’s boots clanged like battle drums on the
metal slats of the suspended walkway as he paced over to a podium topped with
one of Midgard’s ever-present screens.

I think I’m just going to tag back whoever tagged me because it’s been long enough that I’m sure y’all have new stuff now. Who else? @incredifishface, @seidrade, @wouldyouknowmore
