This is by far my longest hiatus between updates: it’s been 13 and a half months since I posted the previous chapter. I’m really sorry, guys. I’ve had a lot going on in the year since my last update: I finished and defended my dissertation; I applied for a crap ton of jobs (more than 60); I finally(!!) got a job… a 1-year postdoc, which means I’m already on the job market again; I moved to Canada for this 1-year job, which has presented a variety of administrative hassles; and now I’m teaching my own class for the first time (not just TAing for a professor).
I’m also sorry that, in addition to being a year late, this chapter is shorter than usual and not much happens. Well, not much happens externally… most of the action is going on in Loki’s head. And while, as you all know, I was not on the whole pleased with Ragnarok, it did provide me with an interesting mechanism for introducing some of Loki’s doubts.
Guys, if you ever speculate what Loki experienced after falling, how he ended up with Thanos, what happened to him when imprisoned by Thanos, and what Loki’s thoughts were during Avengers, I’d highly recommend this fic. @philosopherking1887 builds off of the hints we’re given in the movie and creates something very compelling.

Like @foundlingmother said, if you want a truly fantastic, incredibly unique and introspective read through Loki’s eyes of his misadventures after the end of Thor— with sharp, clever writing that makes you go OOOHHHH every chapter with a brilliant missing piece that just snaps everything unexplained by canon right into place— you’ve come to the right fic.

I’m just gonna keep shilling for this speculative fanfiction I’ve been writing (and haven’t abandoned, even though I haven’t updated it in 10 months…).
According to Tom Hiddleston, what Loki experienced was “like the worst place imaginable. I think, he went to sort of all of the darkest recesses of the Universe, you know. I’m sure he had a brush with … several brushes with death. I think he run in to the shadiest characters you can find in the Nine Realms. I think he had to rely on his wits to protect himself. And it was really really really unpleasant, I think. Umm… and all I have to, you know, I don’t have any frame of reference for that, really, except for a imagining what it might be like to be…, I don’t know, to be kidnapped by sort of a terrorist cell or something. And have to survive very very frightening and precarious existence. But whatever it was, it was important when Loki came back for the Avengers. Whatever compassion he had left, was absolutely kind a shriveled to a minimum. Because of the experience he had. Harrowing, I think, and scarring for life. In a way that Odin and Thor, and Frigga find very very difficult to understand.”
And he’s also compared it to a runaway child getting picked up by the wrong people, and that brings to my mind images of the absolute worst of the worst things imaginable. Look at what Thanos did to a person he considered to be “his daughter”.

Not to be all self-promotey and stuff… well, what the hell, I’m self-promoting because people keep lamenting the lack of “Loki’s lost year” fic and I’ve written 72k words of one. And here’s the Thorki fic where Thor asks Loki what happened. It’s not Ragnarok or IW-compatible because it was written before both of them… but I find it comforting to think about that version of things. The Loki in the void fic doesn’t conflict with anything that’s been revealed, though.
I bought (donated?) myself a thing. I’m feeling pretty good about my spending choices, and not only because it was for a good cause…
And now I’m desperately hoping that Thor: Ragnarok hasn’t contradicted the basic premise of the fic, because I would be sad if it became obsolete before I even finished it.

And meh, the second trailer contradicted a story I started based on the first trailer. I’ll just pop a ‘canon divergence’ tag on that & keep on writing;)
Thanks!! I asked illwynd (who saw it at the premiere) about this, and they kindly reassured me that nothing in the movie makes the fic impossible. Which, of course, means the MCU is still not bothering to tell us what the hell happened to Loki, but also gives me more time to finish it before “Infinity War” renders it canon-divergent…
