I was tagged by @loxxxlay and @wnnbdarklord… probably about 2 weeks ago, but I’ve been procrastinating because this is actually the kind of thing that requires some thought. But I’m finally doing it because who would pass up an opportunity to rec their own work?

Hello, you have been identified as An Awesome Fic Writer™. Congrats, you rock! So that all of your readers can shower you with some extra love today, please tell us your favourite five stories of yours and why you like them and then send this to another five fic authors you think deserve this title!

1. The Abyss Gazes Also (gen; Loki in the Void / Loki & Thanos fic, a.k.a. WTF happened to Loki between Thor 1 and The Avengers?)

This fic isn’t my favorite for the writing quality, which I’ll admit is pretty uneven, but because it’s the longest thing I’ve ever written (at 72k words, it’s longer than my dissertation); it’s the first fic I started writing when I got back into fanfiction in 2015, after 10 years’ hiatus; and it’s the fic that I’ve put the most thought into. It’s also been one of the most frustrating, both because I have trouble writing plot – introspection and conversations are where I’m most comfortable – and because nobody’s fucking reading it. (OK, not nobody, but very few people.) It’s especially frustrating when I see people on Tumblr complaining about the lack of Loki-in-the-Void fic that isn’t straight-up torture porn (hello!), or spitballing half-formed theories about what happened with Thanos, and I’m like, I have thought about this extensively! Here are my extensive thoughts! Yes, they are in fic form, and I don’t really want to rehash them in meta. I will say, though, that the few people who have read it have been very enthusiastic, and a remarkable number of the comments are people saying they’ve made it their headcanon about what happened, which is an incredible vote of confidence. Perhaps one of the things that makes me proudest is that the enthusiastic readers are split between people who would consider themselves “Loki stans/apologists” and Thorki or Thor&Loki fans who get annoyed about said Loki stans/apologists trying to absolve Loki of all blame. The fact that people in both camps like my fic indicates that I’ve come up with an account that assigns Loki just the right amount of culpability: he’s not completely innocent, but there are some major extenuating circumstances. (And maybe the two camps don’t actually disagree as much as they think they do… it may be mostly a matter of emphasis and group membership signaling.)

2. Desert Flowers (very mild Thorki; Thor and Loki get high and talk philosophy)

This is my first Thorki fic, written before I was really committed to shipping it, but it ended up kicking off my now 12-fic Thorki series Whatever is done from love. The funniest thing about this fic is that it started as a crack idea: what would happen if Loki got Thor stoned and then tried to get him to talk about philosophy? But then I took it entirely too seriously, thinking about when and where Loki would have gotten marijuana, and then suddenly it veered into issues of racism and morality and I really started thinking about Loki’s Jewish coding in Marvel media. And there are Nietzsche quotes, of course.

3. The Tree of Knowledge (full-on Thorki, immediately follows “DF”)

This is my first fully committed Thorki fic, with actual sex. I also think it’s probably my most consistently well-written fic. It seemed to flow more quickly and easily than most of my other fics; parts of it were fully formed in my head before I committed it to electronic paper.

4. Winter, Autumn, and Spring (Thorki porn with feelings; 10 years before Thor’s coronation, Loki tells him they need to end their affair)

I have kind of mixed feelings about this fic because the writing is sometimes on the florid side, but a lot of my Thorki readers say it’s their favorite. And I think it’s also one of my more original ideas. In the realm of canon-compliant fic, there’s a lot of first-time pre-canon Thorki out there, a lot of TDW prison sex, imagined reunions before Ragnarok came out, post-Ragnarok “where did that ‘I’m here’ scene go?” or “married life” on the Ark… but as far as I know, I’m the only one who’s written a fic bridging the gap between pre-canon Thorki and the tense, semi-hostile situation between them as the first Thor movie begins. And I think I did a reasonable job making it plausible, if I may say so.

5. The Third Time (gen; Loki dies for real in some vaguely described speculative version of Ragnarok, he and Thor have a last conversation)

This is the first fic I posted on AO3 (though I had started working on “Abyss” beforehand), and like “The Tree of Knowledge,” I think it’s one of my best-written. It’s more concise and precisely worded than most of my other fics, probably because I had it almost entirely formulated in my head before I wrote it down: it was worn smooth over the course of many showers, like a river pebble. I wish Loki’s actual movie death had permitted him as much dignity.

Tagging 5 people who have probably already been tagged, but I’m too lazy to go digging through your blogs to verify: @darklittlestories, @ghostxforest, @illwynd, @incredifishface, @rynfinity

It’s probably tacky to reblog this, but I did put some thought into it… and also I’m not confident that some of the people I tagged actually saw it. Why does Tumblr keep fucking up with the tag notifications…?

Tom Hiddleston as Loki featured in the Avengers: Infinity War – The Official Movie Special book.

Via Torrilla/weibo

I neither can nor want to read this tbh. Anyone else can give general heads-up as to how atrocious this is re: general vilifying, powers / intelligence erasure, backstory and so on?

@shine-of-asgard Its honestly fine if you want to read— that first page is just brief interview questions. Mostly Tom just talking about wearing his costume, getting into character, his acting relationship with Hemsworth (this part is quite sweet), his love of Branagh’s approach to Thor and his excitement/observation that people have latched onto the characters and seem to enjoy having real emotions in their blockbuster superhero movies. The “bad boy” bit in the title isn’t followed-up except for where Tom (probably jokingly) says the horns give Loki a bit of the devil about him.

What did catch my eye was the blurb about the Mind Stone on the next page— and the claim that Thanos didn’t know what it was when he gave it to Loki in the scepter. I’m sorry, what?!?! This is news to me.

WTF, Marvel? How do you keep making your big bad scary new villain sound like such a dipshit? At this point I believe my own account of what happened with Thanos more than I believe anything coming from these ass-clowns.

Also I just caught that it says “[Thanos] granted use of the stone to Loki to help him in his proposed conquest of Earth”

So like, not to take this too seriously because honestly, who knows how closely this kind of collateral print stuff is proofread by the higher ups…

But that sounds like it was Loki’s idea to target Earth— which is something that’s often been debated. Loki has a few lines in Avengers that sound like he’s doubtful of Thanos’ ability to deliver an army. The Other says something like “you’ll have your war, Asgardian” — doesn’t he? (I can’t pull up a video at the moment to see.)

I always thought that was a bit funny because Loki was clearly being threatened/coerced/tortured on some level and clearly under Thanos’ control. So why did it sound so much like he was trying to bargain, as if he were an equal partner in the venture? I always figured those comments were merely Loki trying to reassert his regal bearing and pull his pride together, trying to hide his fear before going off to “conquer.”

But… if Loki was the one who first suggested going to Earth (perhaps offering his services in order to save his own skin) his comments would make even more sense, because then of course he’d want to act as though he actually gave a shit about conquering Midgard as a general of Thanos. He’d have to make Thanos and The Other believe he was dedicated to not just Thanos’ cause, but his own selfish goals of ruling Earth— which of course, wouldn’t possibly compete with Thano’s goal of attaining the Stones.

Btw— if Thanos didn’t even know he already had the fucking Mind Stone in his thot little hands, how the hell did he know the Tesseract was on Earth? (Remind me— Do they say in any of the movies/deleted scenes specifically why Thanos knows about the Tesseract being found/reawakened on Earth? I forget if it’s explicitly mentioned that the energy signature calls to him or to the Mind Stone, etc. If that’s ever mentioned on screen, then something really doesn’t add up and this book is talking nonsense. But if it’s only a vague reference, perhaps we can deduce that Loki knew what the Mind Stone was, and/or told him about the Tesseract in order to entice Thanos into working with his plan.)

Either way… Loki probably knew if he played his cards right, there was a decent chance of Thor and Co. or even Odin himself preventing him from taking the Tesseract. So it makes me wonder if Loki purposefully leapt at the chance to also snag the Mind Stone from Thanos (getting caught and allowing the Avengers to analyze it, then later tossing it aside for Natasha to find— he practically giftwraps it for them) as well as botching the invasion and making sure the Tesseract would land in Thor/Asgard’s hands. Maybe he didn’t know which Stone would end up where, but he knew that anywhere was better than with Thanos, and not having either Stone would significantly hinder Thano’s ability to reach the Nine Realms.

Whew. So yes…

I always thought Loki purposefully pulled quite the fast one on Thanos by losing on purpose— but this would be potential proof that he pulled a double fast-one, knowing what the Mind Stone was before Thanos did.

Now I just want to know if Thanos was like, hmm you’ll need a weapon, how about this long piece of junk— and Loki saw the Mind Stone and was like YES I mean sure, I guess that’ll do, you’re the boss *shrug*

Yeah, I do think the way we were supposed to interpret those lines in The Avengers was that it was Loki’s idea to invade and conquer Earth. I also kind of suspect (as I acknowledged in the notes to the chapter of “Abyss” where I dealt with it) that the tag scene at the end of Thor, where we see Loki looking all beat-up and still in the formal armor he was wearing when he fell, was supposed to have taken place shortly after Loki fell, and maybe we were supposed to infer that he had fallen to Earth and somehow found the Tesseract himself.

But neither of those ideas made a whole lot of sense to me. I mean, I guess it’s possible that Loki has the ability to detect powerful magical objects. But I knew they were building toward something with Thanos and the Infinity Stones – I didn’t get into the MCU until after AOU had come out, so I didn’t start writing MCU fanfiction until I’d watched all the way through that – so I kind of thought of Infinity Stones as being Thanos’s thing, and it made more sense to me that Thanos was the one who had found the Tesseract using the Mind Stone, which we knew he gave to Loki. No, they don’t say explicitly that the Mind Stone detected the tampering with the Tesseract; there’s just that bit of ominous narration by The Other at the beginning of The Avengers, saying “The Tesseract has awakened. It is on a little world,” etc. They do show him handing the scepter to Loki in the same little intro bit, but I don’t think we’re supposed to draw any inferences from that.

There was also that exchange in The Avengers where Loki says “I have seen the true power of the Tesseract” and Thor immediately asks, “Who showed you this power? Who controls the would-be king?” That strongly suggested to me that Loki wouldn’t have known all that much about the Infinity Stones before his encounter with Thanos, which is why Thor immediately infers that someone else must have taught him. And that made me seriously question whether invading Earth had actually been Loki’s idea, because Thanos is the one who wants the Tesseract and knows how and where to find it. So… what gives? And that’s why I decided for fic purposes that Thanos convinced Loki that invading Earth was his idea, Inception-style. Using the Mind Stone, of course, because he had it. And he definitely fucking knew what it was, I don’t know what that writer was smoking. He temporarily relinquished one Infinity Stone in order to secure a second. It didn’t work out, but sometimes you gotta take a gamble to win big.

7 sentences & last sentence memes

I was tagged by several different people to do these WIP memes: @loxxxlay tagged me to do the 7 sentences one and @illwynd and @seidrade tagged me for the last sentence one. But I’ve been so bad at keeping up with writing recently that I don’t really have anything new. The 7 sentences meme is especially hard because…

The rules are as follows: go to page 7 of your WIP, go to the 7th line, share 7 sentences, and tag 7 more writer-bloggers to continue the challenge.

…but I don’t have 7 pages of any unposted fics (except a really old one that I think I’ve used for this meme before) or new chapters of partially posted fics. The only new chapter for which I’ve written anything is 2 pages of the next chapter of The Abyss Gazes Also – which I swear I have not abandoned, even though I haven’t updated it in over a year now. (So rest assured, person who left a comment on the last chapter saying “Dear author, Wherth [sic] art thou updating this?” Don’t I wish I fucking knew.)

So I’ll just have to make do by going to the seventh line of the last page I’ve written and sharing 7 sentences (or possibly 8… but I wanted to finish the line of dialogue):

Thor jerked his head back at Stark. “Wherever these mortals wish to take you. I will be accompanying them.”

“‘Mortals’? Really?” I heard Stark’s muffled robotic voice mutter.

I snort-laughed; it was a touch vulgar. “As what? Their hired muscle? Are you going to help them beat the Tesseract out of me?”

And then here’s the last sentence I’ve written, which is not consecutive to the foregoing:

When he spun Mjölnir and lifted us into the air, I was facing backwards over his shoulder, the side of my face pressed uncomfortably close to his.

The 7 sentences meme says I’m supposed to tag 7 people and the last sentence meme says I should tag as many people as there are words in the sentence. I’m pretty sure I don’t know 27 fic writers on here, so I’m just going with 7. Sorry if I’m re-tagging some people, but I was tagged long enough ago that maybe some of y’all will have something new to share (unlike me) …: @darklittlestories, @fairy-changeling@foundlingmother, @incredifishface, @runnerfivestillalive@satanssyn-n-things@wouldyouknowmore

This has inspired me to start working on “Abyss” again, which is good… or would be, if I didn’t have actual academic things I need to be working on.

One of few things for which I’m grateful to Ragnarok is the idea that Loki has the power to read minds under certain circumstances (skin-to-skin contact, maybe?) – which I headcanon was something he got from exposure to the Mind Stone, given (1) the similarity to the powers Wanda got from it, and (2) the fact that we’ve never seen Loki use this power before or heard anyone refer to it. (Not that that means anything, since consistency with his powers is obviously not a high priority for anyone at Marvel…)  This has given me the opportunity to introduce another angst-worthy source of doubt about what he’s doing in The Avengers and why he’s doing it.

was tagged by both @aliceinthinkland and @veliseraptor (ahhhh thank you both *_* <3). I know i don’t do these anymore, but I guess the power of my vanity has beaten my anxiety for the moment lmao (in seriousness, I’m super insecure, so this is probably good for me anyway)

Hello, you have been identified as An Awesome Fic Writer™. Congrats, you rock! So that all of your readers can shower you with some extra love today, please tell us your favourite five stories of yours and why you like them and then send this to another five fic authors you think deserve this title!

A Moment of Peace

A huge flaw in my writing is that I suck at grounding the reader in the scene. So literally when I wrote this, my #1 goal was to engage the five senses (via Thor whump lol) and really practice that description. (Please don’t reread the first chapter now bc you can literally see me ticking the 5 senses off, one by one lmao.) Even in later chapters, I wrote things massively out of my comfort zone (i.e. fight scenes ew, dialog between more than 2 characters ewwww), and it was really hard, but I think it came out well. And overall, I’m just really happy with my speculation for IW 🙂 Sorry to brag, but even my insecure self can say I like Loki better in this than the canon Loki we got. esp in the chapter I’m writing now :’)

Brothers of Habit

the accumulation of my favorite favorite favorite things ever, including (but not limited to) trauma-bonding/shared trauma, complicated consent, thor whump, loki whump, brotherly angst and comfort, noncon, and noncon recovery. It was one of those fics where The Words randomly appeared at 3am, waking me up and forcing themselves on my crappy phone keyboard in pitch darkness, which, as most authors know, is super fun. (: And I’m just really proud of how the concept (“Thor and Loki have fucked so much that now they can’t stop???”) actually turned out rather…. believably? And not like a crack!fic??? Am both proud and relieved. XD Also I’m happy with the prose itself 😀

Tempting Death

obviously this was written like 5 billion years ago, so I hope I can write a little better now, but for that time of my life, it was probably the best writing I was capable of and I’m really proud of it even to this day. Writing about psychological brainwashing on a character post-suicide-attempt is exactly as fun as it sounds (assuming ur like me lmao)

The Little Things

ahh different fandom (and seriously if u like Loki at all for the same reasons that I like Loki, I highly recommend the manga TRC ok), but I am so happy with this fic. o.o One of my biggest irritations about the manga was how Fai, after having an incredibly well done mental illness arc, was like… instantly cured at the end? So this fic was about showing the leftover difficulties in his recovery and how he has to continuously learn healthier and non-toxic coping mechanisms. Much slower recovery, never cured, and just an analysis of how his relationship with Kurogane is healthy&positive all around. I loved writing this ❤

One Last Breath

this one isn’t a fic, it’s an original short story I wrote about rape culture and, on recommendation from a professor, am thinking about trying to publish, idk, we’ll see. But I wrote it for one of my assignments last semester, and I just feel like it’s the highest quality of writing I am capable of at the moment, and I’m really proud of it. And if I ever become Not Depressed and magically publish it or (more likely) get rejected too many times, I’ll let anyone who wants to read it ^_^ ❤

Tagging (trying to go for people who actually have much more than 5 fics lol or weren’t already tagged): @raven-brings-light @dictionarywrites @zombiecheetah @iamanartichoke @philosopherking1887 @foundlingmother @thotki @pro-antagonist @gorgeousgalatea (and as always, only if you want to 🙂 )

Thanks so much for the tag! I’ll get to it… sometime. Maybe when I have furniture? I don’t know. Moving is weird purgatory. Anyway, I’m reblogging this to give your self-recs some more exposure 🙂

Okay what’s the ao3 username of the author of first thing?😄

foundlingmother:

*claps* I get to pimp out my friend @philosopherking1887! Thank you!

First Things, part of the Whatever is done from love series, is by her, and her AO3 user is Philosopher_King. Get ready for a lot of angst, philosophy, and sex!

I’d also recommend checking out The Ninth Deadly Sin (a The Good Place inspired Thorki fic).

And if you’re willing to branch out into gen fics, Prince of Darkness (a Loki-as-Lucifer twist on how Loki reacts to discovering he’s a Frost Giant in Thor) and The Abyss Gazes Also (a fic about Loki’s time in the void/with Thanos which isn’t really that whumpish despite the subject matter) are both quality fics.

Thank you so much for the recs!!!

Where does this come from?

Euagh! What happened to his teeth?!?!?!!

I was thinking that too, but chose to believe that it’s just the light.

It’s from Thor’s end-credit scene. Here’s a more clear gif:

It’s not the light. His teeth are bloody. His skin looks like it’s burnt. He is emaciated. It seems like his right eye has blood in it. He is clearly not in a good condition. This is even a worse look than his state at the begining of Avengers. More proof of physical torture at the hands of Thanos and his allies.

I have to stop myself from crying every time I see this Loki. Broken Loki, tortured Loki, a Loki who has been brought to the cliff’s edge of insanity and thrown off. Judging by how short his hair is here, and how long it is in Avengers 1, this end credits scene was not long after he fell. So who knows what further tortures and brainwashing he was subjected to before he was cleaned up and deposited on Earth.

The fact that he smiles, even if it’s a fake ironic smile, it just shows me how beyond sanity he is.

His look here reminds me of Rumplestiltskin played by Robert Carlyle

This scene caused me some trouble in writing my Loki-in-the-Void fic because I didn’t understand how Loki ended up on Earth, if that’s where he was, before he ended up wherever Thanos found him (or vice versa, I suppose), and I also didn’t know how he would have found the Tesseract without Thanos’s help. So I ended up saying this was a projection from Sanctuary, but the reason Loki looks like a beat-up version of himself at the the end of Thor is because Loki has to use the Mind Stone to send the projection that far and it fucks with his self-image, which is what he uses to create the projections. (I swear it kind of makes sense in context…)

Prince of Darkness – Chapter 1: Paradise Lost – Philosopher_King – Thor (Movies) [Archive of Our Own]

philosopherking1887:

“After Odin fell into the Sleep, Loki kept going back to the Vault every few hours to stand before the plinth where the Casket of Ancient Winters lay. Like a guilty man returning to the scene of the crime. But what was the crime, he wondered, and whose? Loki’s driving his father past the brink of exhaustion by confronting him with the truth? Or Odin’s abandoning his son when he most needed his father’s guidance? Or was it earlier: the lie he had told Loki for his whole life only to reveal the truth in the wrong way, at the wrong moment, and then escape taking responsibility for the aftermath? …

“He saved my life, Loki reminded himself; I would have died if he hadn’t taken me. But was that even true? Could he believe Odin’s word about anything, now? Was he a rescued castoff or a hostage? … Loki was starved for knowledge, and he knew he would not get it from Odin. Nor could he expect truth from his mother, from Frigga: Odin might well have told her the same lies. No, there was only one person he could ask: Laufey himself. As a king to another king, Laufey owed him the courtesy of truth.”

Posting my giveaway fic for @shine-of-asgard on AO3 in two parts with a bit of a delay, for exposure reasons. (Do you have an AO3 account, so I can list it as a gift?) Prompt: “Loki/Lucifer and Odin/God. Variation of the ‘Lightbringer’ theme where Loki rebels against Odin and tries to steal the Casket of Winters to give it back to the Jotnar. It can follow the ‘biblical’ version with Odin striking Loki down and Loki falling from Asgard or you can spin it any other the way you want. Bonus points for the appearance of Thor as a conflicted good archangel who loves his brother but won’t go against God for him.”

Chapter 2, “Paradise Regained,” has also been posted.

Prince of Darkness – Chapter 1: Paradise Lost – Philosopher_King – Thor (Movies) [Archive of Our Own]

Prince of Darkness – Chapter 2: Paradise Regained – Philosopher_King – Thor (Movies) [Archive of Our Own]

philosopherking1887:

“Thor was beginning to think he might be happy in Midgard. Not yet, of course; not while the news of his father’s death and his mother’s rejection was still so fresh, not while he could still feel the ache in his muscles from straining to lift Mjölnir, in vain. But someday. He would court Jane slowly, as befit a lady of her standing and education. Selvig, who seemed to stand in place of a father for her, had given his implicit permission.

But when he dared to raise his eyes, Frigga’s expression seemed wrong; it was worry, not anger, that creased her brow and tightened her lips.”
