I was tagged by @seiramili7 to do one of those “get to know you” memes. Thanks!

Relationship status: Single, very single. I just deleted Tinder from my phone because I realized I don’t want to be dating. I’ll psychoanalyze myself about it later.

Favorite Colors: blue and green and combinations thereof

Lipstick or Chapstick: off-brand chapstick

3 Favorite foods: Afghan spiced pumpkin (kaddo), Persian pomegranate-walnut stew (fsenjan), Ethiopian anything with the sourdough bread (injera). I think I need to go out to eat… I’ve been eating too much boring food at home.

Song stuck in my head: “Dear Theodosia” from Hamilton (because I just reblogged that post where Lin-Manuel says that he wrote it the week he and his wife adopted their dog)

Last song I listened to: I don’t know, I don’t usually listen to music while working. I’ve been watching a lot of “Angel,” so I guess the credits music…

Last movie I watched: Um… I’m not sure I’ve watched any movies since I made my friends watch X-Men: Days of Future Past, which was also my answer the last time I did a meme that asked this.

Top 3 TV shows: “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “The West Wing” (the seasons Aaron Sorkin wrote), “The Good Place”

Books I’m currently reading: Nothing, really. I bought The Fifth Season, the first book of N.K. Jemisin’s Broken Earth series, on Kindle, but I haven’t started reading it. I’ve also been meaning to read The Master and Margarita for a while because I named my cat Margarita as kind of a joke.

Last thing I googled: “black cat reddish fur” because I read something suggesting that my cat’s rust-colored highlights might be a sign of a tyrosine deficiency… but that might only be if your cat used to be all black and they start turning rust-colored. She’s always had the highlights, so it’s probably just a recessive red gene, which is more common in long-haired cats.

Time: 3:25 pm

How many blankets do you sleep in: Usually just one, over a sheet. When it’s especially warm, just the sheet; when it’s cold I add a comforter.

Dream trip: Scotland and Scandinavia for Scotch and scenery.

Anything you really want: A tenure-track job in a location that doesn’t suck.

OK, I’m supposed to tag 15 people I want to get to know better… @angryowlet, @arthelia, @assholewaren@darkellaine@edge-of-silvermoon, @gingermous@impalaforthree, @just-another-millenial97, @malicemanaged, @miharu87@ms-cellanies, @qr-sa@seamayweed, @victoriousgirlgrowsup@whitemage03

I was tagged by @musclesandhammering… only 3 days ago! My response time is improving.

Gender: cis woman

Height: 5′1″

Hogwarts House: I got Slytherin the first time I took the Pottermore sorting quiz several years ago, then Ravenclaw when I took it again more recently. So… Slytherclaw?

Favorite Animal: Cats. All of the cats. Foxes are cute, but they make the most appalling noises.

Average Hours Of Sleep: I need 10 or I don’t feel rested, probably because of the ridiculously vivid dreams I have every night. This is a source of endless annoyance and frustration to me.

Cats or Dogs: cats, obviously

Dream Trip: The far north of Europe: Scotland, Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland. I want to see fjords and geysers and northern lights and where they filmed north of the Wall in Game of Thrones and try lots of different kinds of Scotch.

Dream Job: Tenured professor at a smallish research university with a modest teaching load and smart, motivated, but not grade-grubbing students. Is that too specific?

When I Made this Account: November 2015, after I started writing fanfiction again after a 10-year hiatus.

I think I’m going to tag my most 10 recent followers just to find out what they’re about: @pennie-dreadful, @bambi-butt, @thatwhichilove, @internalmessandweird, @angryowlet, @radioactivephysicist, @edge-of-silvermoon, @thedarklingwitch, @impalaforthree

URL songs game

The rules are spell out your url with a song starting with each letter of your name.

I was tagged by @lucianalight (two weeks ago, sorry…) and it just looked like too much fun to resist! I may be cheating, though… I was having trouble coming up with song titles, so I opened my iTunes and sorted the songs alphabetically by title so I could find the ones I’m especially fond of. I’ve decided that articles (A, The) don’t count as starting letters. And yes, I’m going to do the numbers at the end of my URL, too.

Pirate Jenny from The Threepenny Opera, music by Kurt Weill, original German lyrics by Bertolt Brecht, English lyrics/translation by Marc Blitzstein. The recording I have is sung by Judy Collins.

The Highwayman by Loreena McKennitt, words from the poem by Alfred Noyes. (Guess I’m really into pseudo-folk ballads, huh?)

I Am a Rock, Simon & Garfunkel

The Lakes of Pontchartrain, a 19th-century American ballad of unknown origin (which I still have stuck in my head after hearing it on NPR last week). My recording is by a Celtic band called Deanta.

O, Valencia!, The Decemberists (more pseudo-folk ballads that get stuck in my head really easily)

Satan Is My Motor, CAKE (this is kind of my personal anthem)

Old Friends/Bookends, Simon & Garfunkel

Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, Tom Lehrer (look it up, really)

Hurt Before, The Corrs

Eleanor Rigby, The Beatles

Rockin’ the Suburbs, Ben Folds

Kind captain, I’ve important information” from Gilbert & Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore (I have the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company recording). As with many operas, the “title” is actually just the first line of the song.  This might seem like a really weird thing to include, but I have very fond memories from when I was in 2nd grade and my sister was in 5th grade and the older kids in the elementary school choir put on a remarkably respectable production of Pinafore, and my sister’s classmate who played Dick Deadeye was especially hammy and wonderful. I even made a joke/reference to this song in the notes to a chapter of The Abyss Gazes Also: “The merry cat o’ nine tails, the merry cat o’ nine tails, the merry cat o’ nine tails and the tar!”

It’s a Hit, Rilo Kiley

Nightswimming, R.E.M.

Gollum’s Song from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, music by Howard Shore, lyrics by Fran Walsh, performed by Emiliana Torrini. (This is such a Loki song!)

1 By One All Day, The Shins

8 Days a Week, The Beatles

8 Miles High, The Byrds

7 Devils, Florence + The Machine (also a great Loki song)

Whew, that was a lot. Gonna tag some of the usual suspects whose URLs aren’t that long because I’m not completely sadistic: @acebakes, @darklittlestories, @foundlingmother (OK, yours is pretty long but none of the letters are too weird), @illwynd, @iscariotsss, @loxxxlay (sorry about the X’s, but I would like to see what you come up with), @pedeka@seidrade

I’m going to make a new post rather than reblogging because this chain is getting awkwardly long. I was tagged by @acebakes. Thanks! Though the following would not seem to support the claim that I have good taste.

Rules: tag 9 people with excellent taste.

Colors I’m currently wearing: gray, red, and black (it’s a Stanford T-shirt and PJ shorts)

Last band shirt I bought: I don’t think I’ve ever bought a band T-shirt…

Last band I saw live: Uh… probably my friends’ folk duo. I don’t see a lot of live music; it tends to be too loud. Unless it’s classical or choral music, that’s fine.

Lipstick or Chapstick: chapstick in the winter

Last song I listened to: Sylvan Esso was playing on the NPR show “Live From Here” on Saturday, so…

Last movie I watched: X-Men: First Class

Last three TV shows I watched: “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Westworld,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”

Last three characters I identified with: Loki (obvs), Amy Santiago, Hailey Rutledge from “Mozart in the Jungle”

Books I’m currently reading: A really badly written book about Nietzsche that I’m supposed to be reviewing. The stylistic and grammar problems make me want to cry. How did this make it through the review process at an academic press?! (Answer: academic presses actually do less editing than commercial presses.)

Tagging: @darklittlestories, @foundlingmother, @ghostxforest, @iscariotsss, @lucianalight@lunariagold, @princess-ikol, @seidrade, @shine-of-asgard (I kind of keep tagging the same people for everything… sorry)

Favorite Female Characters

Rules: List 10 of your favorite female characters from 10 different fandoms and tag 10 people.

Thanks for the tag, @lucianalight, and sorry for the delay! Let’s see if I can even come up with 10 fandoms I’ve belonged to… some of them may be dubiously considered “fandoms.”

MCU: Jane Foster (because she’s me)

Marvel TV Universe [which I’m considering separate because the MCU ignores it]: Melinda May (though Jessica Jones runs a close second)

Game of Thrones/ASOIAF: Too many! Catelyn, Arya, & Sansa Stark; Olenna & Margaery Tyrell

Harry Potter: Minerva McGonagall

Lord of the Rings: Eowyn

Star Wars: Jyn Erso (don’t look at me that way, I really liked Rogue One)

The Sandman: Death (yeah, OK, that’s pretty obvious)

Disney [is that a fandom?]: Mulan

Vampire Chronicles: Claudia, obvs

Robin Hobb’s Farseer saga [I devoured all of these in a few months at fyriii’s recommendation, and I don’t know if there’s a fandom but they’re delightful]: Kettricken

Tagging: @acebakes, @darklittlestories@fuckyeahrichardiii, @ghostxforest@iamhisgloriouspurpose, @illwynd@iscariotsss, @stmonkeys@writernotwaiting, @yume-no-fantasy

Tagged by @foundlingmother. I’m doing it now so I don’t forget.

1. coffee or tea [though really it depends on time of day… coffee in the morning, tea later]

2. early bird or night owl

3. chocolate or vanilla

4. spring or fall

5. silver or gold

6. pop or alternative

7. freckles or dimples [though really, what kind of a question is that? I tend to judge faces holistically]

8. snakes or sharks

9. mountains or fields

10. thunderstorm or lightning [wait, what? They’re a package deal. I mean, I like the rain part best, but you don’t get a thunderstorm without lightning]

11. egyptian or greek mythology [apparently the lack of capitalization is part of the style of the meme. I’m side-eyeing it.]

12. ivory or scarlet

13. flute or lyre

14. eyes or lips

15. witch or fairy

16. opal or diamond

17. butterflies or and honeybees

18. macarons or eclairs

19. typewritten or handwritten letters

20. secret garden or secret library

21. rooftop or balcony

22. spicy or mild [how about medium?]

23. opera or ballet

24. london or paris

25. vincent van gogh or claude monet

26. denim or leather [aesthetically; as a practical point, I wear a lot more denim]

27. potions or spells

28. ocean or desert

29. mermaid or siren

30. masquerade ball or and cocktail party

Since tagging mostly appears to be useless at the moment, I’m tagging anyone who sees this.

Favorite Music Meme

@seidrade tagged me 2 weeks ago and I kept forgetting… the meme is just to list 10 songs you love… I guess in no particular order? I’ll do it alphabetically by artist to avoid the appearance of ranking. (That’s why I tag alphabetically, too.)

Haha, the top 25 most played songs in my iTunes are all recordings from my choir concerts. That’s because I can’t normally listen to music while working – it tends to distract me – but if it’s chill and/or familiar enough, it’s OK. And nothing is more non-distractingly familiar than music I’ve sung. So there will be some classical oddities in the list.

  1. “Another Sunny Day,” Belle & Sebastian (gets stuck in my head like no other)
  2. “Nightingale,” Judy Collins (OK, it’s kind of cheesy and kind of obvious but I really like the songs she wrote)
  3. “No Light, No Light,” Florence + the Machine (the lyrics give me serious Thorki vibes)
  4. “You Don’t Know Me,” Ben Folds and Regina Spektor (watch the video, it’s funny)
  5. “The Breaking of the Fellowship,” Howard Shore, from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (yeah, I know that’s not exactly a “song,” but…)
  6. “The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy),” Simon & Garfunkel (I don’t know why I like it so much, I just do)
  7. “Beati Quorum Via,” Charles Villiers Stanford (here’s what that sounds like. The second soprano part is the best.)
  8. “Casimir Pulaski Day,” Sufjan Stevens (the chorus of “Wait For It” from Hamilton always reminds me of the end of this song)
  9. “Reconciliation” from Dona Nobis Pacem by Ralph Vaughan Williams; words from a poem by Walt Whitman. OK, that’s a movement of a cantata rather than a song, but it’s still one of the most beautiful pieces of music I’ve ever sung or heard.
  10. “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” melody by John Wyeth, hymn by Robert Robertson, arranged by Mack Wilberg. This was the recording that most closely approximated the tempo and organ sound with which my (I guess now former) university chapel choir performs it (every year for Baccalaureate). Don’t judge me for liking cheesy Jesus music.

Tagging some people (and you definitely don’t have to provide annotated links, I’m just weird and compulsive): @acebakes@darklittlestories@foundlingmother, @illwynd, @imaginetrilobites, @incredifishface, @princess-ikol, @wouldyouknowmore

Get to know you meme

Rule: Tag 10 followers you want to get to know better

I was tagged by @seidrade. Thanks!

Name: Phil (for fandom purposes)

Gender: Cis woman, more or less. I think maybe I would have identified as non-binary if I’d been born later, but as it is I take the path of least resistance.

Star Sign: Libra, but the “signs as” things never work for me. Gemini ascendant, which is better.

Height: 5’1”

Sexuality: het-leaning bi (Kinsey 2)

What images do you have set as your desktop/cellphone wallpaper? Computer desktop is random waterscapes that came with the computer; phone wallpaper is part of the view from the winery where I worked in spring-summer 2014

Have you ever had a crush on a teacher? Hahaha yeah. I had a really unhealthy crush on my undergraduate advisor (who was 44 when I was 20) and some less inappropriate crushes on grad student TAs and postdoctoral lecturers.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? A philosophy professor with tenure, God willing. Preferably in a place that doesn’t suck to live.

If you could be anywhere else right now, where would you be? Scotland would be fun. Or wine tasting in France or Germany.

What was your coolest Halloween costume? My second year of grad school I dressed as Immanuel Kant: I borrowed a long tailored coat from a classmate and wore it with a button-up shirt, black pants tucked up to be knee-breeches, white tights, and very 18th-century-style low-heeled black shoes. I didn’t have a wig, but I tied my hair in a low ponytail and people got the idea… especially when I tilted my head forward and looked serious like in the portrait on the cover of the Cambridge University Press editions.

What’s your favorite 90s show? “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”… but I didn’t watch it until a couple years ago. I wasn’t very culturally aware in the 90s.

Who was your last kiss? Uh… I guess the guy I slept with at Thanksgiving. The stepson of the brother of my parents’ college friend, which is why we were staying in the same place. We’re not actually related.

Have you ever been stood up? Not that I can recall.

Have you ever been to Las Vegas? Yes, for a friend’s birthday. It was terrible. I never want to go back.

Favorite pair of shoes: My slippers, probably.

Favorite fruit: Marionberry. Look them up, they’re amazing.

Favorite book: The Gay Science by Friedrich Nietzsche, of course. Fiction? Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series, if that counts.

Stupidest thing you’ve ever done: Um… had sex on the floor of the seminar room in my department? Incidentally, that was at the Halloween party where I wore the Immanuel Kant costume.
