How the rest of the Fellowship sees Gandalf: unknowably ancient & powerful wizard, highly intimidating, must be treated with respect, when he shows up in your kingdom you know shit’s about to go down

How the hobbits see Gandalf: fun uncle grandpa

#IT’S TRUE AND YOU SHOULD SAY IT #THOUGH HONESTLY THEY PROBABLY SEE GANDALF MORE AS ‘FUN UNCLE GRANDPA WHO’S ALSO A WEED DEALER AND DOES A SIDE LINE OF ILLEGAL FIREWORKS’

that’s the fun part, the whole point of a fun uncle is they are wildly irresponsible

hobbit kids LOVE when Gandalf shows up bcos they know that if they stick to him sooner or later they’ll hear something they shouldn’t or get to do something they shouldn’t or both

Gandalf breaking all the rules.

The Minas Tirith Archives Department probably had strict rules about proper record keeping procedures too, but try telling Gandalf anything and you’d probably get some form of “I do what I want.”

@nerdyveganrunner

Eh, I’m gonna quibble with “the Minas Tirith Archives Department probably has strict rules about proper record keeping procedures”, given that we see Gandalf being shown into a poorly lit room full of jumbled stacks of books and loose papers that was clearly a disaster before he arrived. Maybe they did have good standards at one point, but Denethor cut the library budget and they had to downsize their storage space, let go of some staff, you know how it is.

#DO NOT GET ME STARTED ON MINAS TIRITH’S POOR ARCHIVAL STANDARDS#I HAVE RANTED ABOUT THEM BEFORE#I WILL RANT ABOUT THEM AGAIN#I HAVE A TAG SPECIFICALLY FOR RANTING ABOUT THE MINAS TIRITH ARCHIVES#much that once was has been lost for none now live who can remember where we shelved it

@backofthebookshelf

#okay but denethor would not have been the one to cut the budget#denethor was (in spite of what the movies portrayed) a wise and learned man#who was actually able to use a palantir and resist corruption because of his strong will#the REASON he was the way he was when we saw him#was because he was a learned man who knew unfortunately well how strong sauron was#and saw no hope for his people#so no#denethor ‘i used a palantir and had too much intergrity for sauron to take it from me’#would not have slashed the library budget#(he did however strongly dislike gandalf)#(so he might very well have refused to let anyone help gandalf) (via @hailvady)

fuckin’ thank you.
