Tom deserves all awards!

Tom’s performance in this scene reminds me of a story my college choir director used to tell about a German orchestra conductor he worked with. The orchestra was hired to play for a local theater’s production of Oklahoma! The first day they rehearsed the score, the conductor raised his baton and said (in a little old man German accent), “All right, my darlinks, let us see if we can turn shit into gold.”

We see it when Hela’s in the Vault and she specifically notes that it’s not fake but rather “weak”, so there’s absolutely no reason he couldn’t have grabbed it and done exactly this except that Thor and Loki had to be useless for the first 10 minutes of the film so that the plot could progress.

@foundlingmother I guess I forgot that because so much of that movie was worth forgetting… and I absolutely refuse to rewatch it. Something else they retconned or just weren’t paying attention to… I didn’t notice that the Casket was being used to freeze the Bifrost open until a Tumblr post called my attention to it; I thought the Observatory was just frozen because it was connected to Jotunheim. But given that the Casket was still in the Vault… the quick-thinking, forward-planning Loki of previous films would have grabbed it and saved it and pulled it out to use it in a pinch, as he did with Heimdall. Another example of how Markus & McFeely had to make him stupid so they could use him as an emotional manipulation device.

Because Marvel hates him and his fans. They can’t figure him out because he doesn’t fit neatly into a hero/villain schema; they think his fans are just a bunch of airheaded horny fangirls, and Marvel is not here to service female desire unless it falls in line with cishet male power fantasies. They killed him brutally for shock value (to show how dangerous Thanos is, because Loki’s attempt to fight him was *so* effective…) and for their unimaginative idea of what Thor’s arc and motivation should be.

So in Avengers: Assemble Loki was able not only to fool Thor but Coulson with not 1 but 2 illusions one of which was TANGIBLE and stabs Coulson but Marvel expects me to believe that in IW my baby just came at Thanos with a butter knife and didn’t have a plan? Nah Bro.

Correction: the Loki that stabbed Coulson wasn’t an illusion. There were 2 illusions: the one that appeared to be escaping the cell when Thor approached, and the one that was threatening Thor with dropping the cage when Coulson showed up with the big gun. It was the real Loki that then came up behind Coulson to stab him with the scepter and then gestured at it as if to say “Sorry I couldn’t have gotten here in person sooner; I needed to retrieve my scepter.”

But the basic point stands. Joss Whedon is smart enough to write Loki; Markus & McFeely are morons.

So Marvel is saying Using Loki’s death as revenge motivation for Thor. Wasn’t the story going that Loki had been tortured and tormented by Thanos into attacking New York, and the fact that this was done to his brother couldn’t have been enough motivation for Thor? No, they had to just brutally kill him off and get him out of the picture because they’re at a loss as to what to do with him. Those brilliant minds at Marvel.

That awkward moment when your character has more class than your entire franchise and you need to dispose of him to make everything else look good.

But first they needed to make an entire movie devoted to stripping him of all the class, dignity, and pathos he had previously possessed.

They shouldn’t have pissed off Joss Whedon. He knew how to make all the central characters, including Loki, interesting in their own ways without any of them completely eclipsing any other. Markus & McFeely and the Russos are too clumsy to do that balancing act. Tony ended up being more compelling and sympathetic than Cap in what was officially a Cap movie, but the creators seem not to be aware of that.

If the heroes are up against the big bad villain, the allies with intel on him are their most important assets.

Avengers: Infinity War – big bad villain is Thanos

The MOST IMPORTANT characters for our heroes’ victory, therefore, SHOULD be Gamora, Nebula, and Loki.

Loki dies in the first 5 minutes of the film to fuel manpain for a man who has already been in pain, Gamora dies to show gross “manpain” of her abuser/kidnapper/killer, and Nebula is shown for only two minutes being totured by said abuser.

Without these important characters, the remaining heroes are never able to properly, knowingly, fight against Thanos. All they’re able to do is react to the attacks from Thanos as they occur.

Like, I understand that a proper story needs to get to that point where everything seems to be lost, the eleventh hour where the characters are in the direst of straits, before the eventual victory. But if all the characters with intel on the villain need to be killed off or incapacitated, so that the rest of the characters just run around reacting instead of planning, in order for the villain to get to that point of apparent victory, then that whole conflict is just cheapened.

It’s the heroes deliberately being debased by the writers so the villain can reach that point of success.

Thanos wasn’t there for Dark World, and I doubt that he and Loki had coffee before he attacked the Asgardian ship

The only time he has had interaction with Loki was between Thor 1 and Avengers

Does that mean that when he fell from the Bifrost, Loki actually died?

I’m pretty sure it means that line was a 4th-wall break and it was the creators telling Loki’s fans not to get their hopes up and also “fuck you.”
