I was doing some giffing and basically re-watched Thor for the purpose (like it was a sacrifice, haha), and I just realised something that gives me new heartache.
Look at this gif:
When Thor broke the Bifrost, he and Loki went flying into the air and would have both fallen into the Void if Odin hadn’t caught them. Thor had no idea – he just couldn’t know – that Odin was going to grab Thor’s leg and save both brothers from dying/becoming lost in the space-time continuum. Still, Thor grabbed Gungnir, for which Loki was trying to reach in some desperate attempt to save his life. Thor still wanted to save Loki, after everything that had happened, and Thor didn’t have much hope, but he saw Loki falling underneath him, trying to get a hold of anything, and they both went for the staff, Loki to save himself, Thor to save Loki, even when he had no way of knowing it was even going to work. But fuck, this hurts the man. Thor tried to be there for his little brother when everything was literally and figuratively falling apart around them, and by the Norns, they might both die, but they’ll die holding that staff together and Thor will die trying to save Loki.
Just putting this here for later when I can watch on repeat and weep to myself.
Also I forgot what all the bottles looked like in the beginning of the scene, so I initially thought this was a joke and it was going to turn into some sort of holiday commercial?
Thank you to OP for filming/finding this and putting it up – I kept forgetting the exact wording of Thor’s comment to Loki before the “I’m here”…
“It’s not the words ‘I’m here’ that tell him; those are late to the party. It’s the faint clap of the bottle stopper hitting the palm of Loki’s hand, then the softer echo of his fingers closing around it.
“Thor doesn’t even know whether he’s surprised or not; he can hardly tell what he feels. But he is a god and a king and a man of his word, so he opens his arms.”
Jumping on the post-Ragnarok hug fic bandwagon with you, @incredifishface and @raven-brings-light… and I’ve kept it gen for now, too. Gotta get the feelings out of my system first.
How did the philosophy reference get in there, you may ask? I dunno, man. These things just happen.
for a moment I was really afraid about that Zeno’s paradox, because I happened to remember this one, and i thought OH NAY YOU DOTH NOT!
i need you to make them sit down and talk for hours about their Odin and Hela feels and thoughts for 40k words YOU HEAR?!? GET TO IT!!
(sorry was that too bossy. I just get excited you see)
Well, I did actually have them talk about their Odin feels quite extensively in a fic that’s no longer canon-compliant… I guess I just can’t resist the hugging and crying. (And a lot of what they say is still current, except for my clearly incorrect Hela-related speculation about how Loki got off Svartalfheim alive.)
Day 1 without Mjolnir: Thor throws a remote at his brother.
Day 2 without Mjolnir: Thor throws his brother at some guards.
2 weeks without Mjolnir: Thor throws increasingly improbable items about desperately hoping to find one that returns to him. Utter destruction lies in his wake.
It occurs to me to add: Loki is actually very much like Mjolnir. Not only is he an effective projectile weapon, but no matter how far he strays, he’ll always come back to Thor.
