watching an actress in full makeup pretend to wash her face and then pat dry her still fully contoured cheeks for an acne wash commercial

when i was 13 i had no idea what make up looked like on. media literacy is important

I especially like the makeup remover ads where she takes off her lipstick, to reveal lighter lipstick underneath.

or the commercials for razors with women shaving their already baby smooth, waxed legs

This is such a surreal, dystopian thing about our culture. We literally treat the natural female body like its obscene. No wonder girls grow up with so much self loathing when they feel as if their own skin is incorrect.

Looking at magazines from early 80′s and earlier really puts in perspective how intolerant of even the most minute human features today’s imagery is. Back then, even on the most polished models, you could see the texture of the makeup, skin pores, fine wrinkles, skin folds, fine body hair, veins… Now absolutely any human texture is removed, down to the tiniest eye capillaries.

The problem with this is its ubiquity. If this was done for the sake of art, say in representing an ethereal fantasy creature in fiction, it would be obviously that; a fantasy. But it is used as advertisement, as aspiration and it is inescapable. Even the most rational, reasonable mind gets swayed when it is constantly bombarded from every angle. Then we get down on people for being insecure but they are responding to what they are being actively taught.
