Favorite Music Meme

@seidrade tagged me 2 weeks ago and I kept forgetting… the meme is just to list 10 songs you love… I guess in no particular order? I’ll do it alphabetically by artist to avoid the appearance of ranking. (That’s why I tag alphabetically, too.)

Haha, the top 25 most played songs in my iTunes are all recordings from my choir concerts. That’s because I can’t normally listen to music while working – it tends to distract me – but if it’s chill and/or familiar enough, it’s OK. And nothing is more non-distractingly familiar than music I’ve sung. So there will be some classical oddities in the list.

  1. “Another Sunny Day,” Belle & Sebastian (gets stuck in my head like no other)
  2. “Nightingale,” Judy Collins (OK, it’s kind of cheesy and kind of obvious but I really like the songs she wrote)
  3. “No Light, No Light,” Florence + the Machine (the lyrics give me serious Thorki vibes)
  4. “You Don’t Know Me,” Ben Folds and Regina Spektor (watch the video, it’s funny)
  5. “The Breaking of the Fellowship,” Howard Shore, from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (yeah, I know that’s not exactly a “song,” but…)
  6. “The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy),” Simon & Garfunkel (I don’t know why I like it so much, I just do)
  7. “Beati Quorum Via,” Charles Villiers Stanford (here’s what that sounds like. The second soprano part is the best.)
  8. “Casimir Pulaski Day,” Sufjan Stevens (the chorus of “Wait For It” from Hamilton always reminds me of the end of this song)
  9. “Reconciliation” from Dona Nobis Pacem by Ralph Vaughan Williams; words from a poem by Walt Whitman. OK, that’s a movement of a cantata rather than a song, but it’s still one of the most beautiful pieces of music I’ve ever sung or heard.
  10. “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” melody by John Wyeth, hymn by Robert Robertson, arranged by Mack Wilberg. This was the recording that most closely approximated the tempo and organ sound with which my (I guess now former) university chapel choir performs it (every year for Baccalaureate). Don’t judge me for liking cheesy Jesus music.

Tagging some people (and you definitely don’t have to provide annotated links, I’m just weird and compulsive): @acebakes@darklittlestories@foundlingmother, @illwynd, @imaginetrilobites, @incredifishface, @princess-ikol, @wouldyouknowmore
