It bothers me kind of a lot that Loki didn’t end up having an actual
purpose for taking the Tesseract. I was looking forward to finding out what he
would do with it, mostly expecting him to use it as a bargaining tool – but it
wasn’t even that! Loki did end up having to surrender it to keep Thor from
getting killed but if Loki hadn’t taken the Tesseract they wouldn’t have been
in that situation to begin with! It seems like taking it was basically just a
pointless impulse decision and I was really hoping there would be more to it than
that. Especially because he could easily have used it so that he and Thor could
escape, or teleport Thanos into deep space (and honestly the fact that he
didn’t can only be explained by Thanos needing to win in that scene for the sake of the plot – and if
that’s not an indicator of bad writing I don’t know what is).

Dear Kevin Feige: 👆🏼👆🏼👆🏼👆🏼👆🏼👆🏼👆🏼you know there’s still time for reshoots!!

It’s possible that he couldn’t use it without some kind of control mechanism: recall that he needed Selvig to build a stable portal in “The Avengers.” But I think he took it as a “just in case” in “Ragnarok” – either as a bargaining chip or thinking he might be able to build or access some way of using it later.
