Just learned from comparing a translation of Nietzsche to the German text that the word billig, which now means “cheap” or “trashy,” used to mean “fair” or “reasonable.” I’m assuming this happened because saying something is fairly or reasonably priced usually means that it’s inexpensive, but it’s just really strange when Nietzsche is talking about “scientific fairness” (wissenschaftliche Billigkeit) but now it translates as “scientific trashiness.”
