In retrospect Sandy Hook marked the end of the US gun control debate. Once America decided killing children was bearable, it was over.
Not just that, but mostly white, mostly well-off suburban children, 6-7 years old. If there was going to be a victim demographic that motivated Republican lawmakers to defy the NRA, that was it. But they doubled down and said the schoolteachers should have had guns.
