okay, so i’ve been wondering for a while but not sure who to ask: what is whump? and how is it different from sadism? use small, non-nietzche words.

As far as I can tell – because the term seems to have been introduced sometime between my first experience with fandom in 2001-2006 and my re-entry into fandom in late 2015 – whump is fanfictional sadism. (Real-life sadism wouldn’t be called whump; that’s just sadism.) It’s fic that dwells on a character getting beaten up physically and emotionally. In effect, it’s torture porn.

I guess that would mean The Passion of the Christ qualifies as Jesus-whump, because all the reviews were describing it as torture porn, and it’s basically Bible fanfiction.

(P.S. if you have a problem with me using Nietzsche words, you might not enjoy my blog…)
