I don’t think it was making fun of the idea of having a protocol to de-Hulk the Hulk. I thought they were just reinforcing the idea that it wasn’t controllable anymore (hence the two hands on the wheel vs. Bruce in the trunk metaphor). They also took Bruce/Nat seriously enough to have the video of her allow Bruce to re-emerge. I agree that that romance wasn’t necessary, but I don’t hate it as much as everyone else, and I certainly don’t hate Joss Whedon as much as everyone else on this site, because I’m not convinced that being a bad feminist makes someone a bad writer.
